It was the story about a little girl who had suffered horrendous abuse while living on the streets in South Africa that inspired Ellie to start the Teddy Trust.
South Africa became the first country to receive teddy bears and since then, through our Rotary partners in Sea Point and Hout Bay, thousands have been widely distributed to children in the townships of Cape Town.
Children living in extreme poverty, street children, children who have been chronically neglected, children who suffer from acute illnesses, children who have been victims of appalling violence and children who have experienced physical or sexual abuse.
Many of the children who have received the teddy bears have suffered more than one of these abuses in their young lives. Teddy bears have been given to children in hospitals and clinics, schools, crèches and at feeding programmes in townships including Khayelitsha, Imizamo Yethu and Hangberg.
Thank you for doing such an awesome and epic journey for children in desperate need. They learn to love and express that love (children who are given teddies).
Such a simple gesture can evoke so much love.
