Fish and Chip Jumper
This jumper is called a Fish and Chip’ jumper because in ‘really poor’ parts of Sub-Saharan Africa some babies leave hospital wrapped in newspaper as their family has nothing else to use. Hence the name, as UK traditionally ‘fish and chips’ were wrapped in newspaper to keep the food portion warm.
Generally these finished garments are shipped to Uganda by TWAM (Tools with a Mission) where they are sent to 12 different African countries for distribution to hospitals and other settings where babies are born.
The Teddy Trust plans to dress our Teddy Bears with these jumpers, and dispatch them to bring comfort to traumatised children. Additionally, the jumpers might be removed and worn by a baby to keep them warm
Pattern
Suggest size 4 needles
Cast on 46 stitches
Knit 2 Purl 2 stitches (rib) for 24 rows
Work 24 rows in stocking stitch starting with a knitting row, then purl row
Cast on 10 stitches at start of the beginning of next 2 rows
Knit 2 Purl 2 stitches (rib) for 24 rows
Cast off
Work 2 pieces
Join side seams
Shoulder seams join 20 stitches, leaving 25 stitches in the middle for the neck
